Open source, cross platform software
These are all free/open source and work on Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.
Projity - edit tasks, milestones, and resources to create timelines, requirements, track project progress.
OpenOffice - A free office suite (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and drawing)
Freemind Create mind maps, good for idea generation and organizing.
Zotero , a bibliographic firefox plugin that helps you remember and organize content.
